Why I closely control my cashflow

A funny thing happened to me whilst I was on holidays in Australia someone stole a cheque from my cheque book. The chequebook was in the top draw of my office which is always manned or locked. (Don't worry it wasn't any of the team)

Now I am not here to tell you who it is or might have been, the fact is I don't know for certain and don't really care. All I do know is that someone stole the cheque, wrote it out for £2000 and deposited it into someone's bank account. The bank cashed it and it wasn't until I checked my account that I realised something was wrong.

I couldn't find the chequebook immediately but when I found it buried in my draw I realised that some had taken cheque 99 even though I was only up to cheque 77.

The bank will refund my money but the important issue that this type of crime raises is: if this happens to you would you notice?

Forget for a moment the amount. Could you honestly say that you would notice if something was out of place. I think most people could not honestly say they would pick it up. It's because of this that criminals can take advantage, maybe not for £2000 but maybe £200.

One of the greatest lessons I have learned repeatedly is to keep on top of all transactions. Many times mistakes, human error and occasionally criminality could have robbed me of what was rightfully mine but because l am so focused on the little details I catch these things before they cost me money or hassle.

So ask yourself if you truly are in control of your finances? If you are, well done, if not - what's stopping you?

Live with passion,

Brett Wood
